Call for consultancy: AI and Digital innovation expert for an online media house

Background

Are you passionate about transforming the media landscape in Rwanda?

The Rwanda Media Programme (RMP) 2021-2026 is a media initiative aimed at fostering a professional, vibrant, and financially sustainable media sector. RMP aims to strengthen journalism standards, truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, fairness, and public accountability while promoting gender inclusivity and diversity.

With the support of Fojo Media Institute, and The Swedish and Swiss embassies in Kigali, we are now running the Phase 2 of the Rwanda Media Viability Program. This phase focuses on equipping selected media houses with tailored support to enhance financial sustainability and drive long-term growth through innovative projects.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital innovation consultant/Specialist for one online youth oriented media house

Consultant profiles & areas of expertise

We require consultants with deep experience in the following specialized areas:

  • Specialist in the use of AI in media organisations.
  • Experience from experimentation and/or implementation of AI-driven solutions enhancing viability of journalism driven media companies.
  • A media practitioner expert from Sub-Saharan Africa is preferred, and ability to inspire with concrete media case stories for the use of AI in media.
  • The preferred consultant should be able to handle both technological and editorial aspects of the implemented projects and should be a good trainer for a diverse group of staff and a facilitator for ethical discussion about the possible

Consultants interested in this opportunity should meet the following criteria

Expertise in AI and Digital innovation in media

  • Proven track record in implementing AI-driven solutions in media organizations, particularly in enhancing the viability of journalism-focused media companies.
  • Hands-on experience with AI tools and automation in editorial processes, content distribution, audience engagement, and revenue generation.
  • Ability to bridge the gap between AI technology and journalistic practices, ensuring ethical and responsible implementation.

1. Strong media industry experience

  • Experience working within or closely with media organizations, particularly online media houses.
  • Familiarity with newsroom workflows, content management systems, and the challenges media companies face in the digital landscape.
  • A deep understanding of how AI can support business sustainability.

2. Regional expertise and contextual understanding

  • Preferably a local or regional media practitioner or digital innovation expert with deep knowledge of the Sub Saharan African media landscape, its challenges, and opportunities.
  • Ability to provide relevant case studies and insights from media companies operating in similar environments.

3. Training and facilitation skills

  • Strong ability to train journalists, editors, and media managers on AI applications, both technically and editorially.
  • Experience conducting workshops, interactive training sessions, and ethical discussions around AI in media.

4. Additional preferred qualifications

  • Prior consulting experience with media organizations or journalism-related projects.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement innovative digital transformation projects in media.
