The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a federally owned international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations. The GIZ Office in Kigali covers GIZ’s portfolio in Rwanda and Burundi.  GIZ Rwanda/Burundi implements projects on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the European Union and other commissioning authorities in the following priority areas: Sustainable Economic Development; Good Governance; Climate, Energy and Sustainable Urban Development; Digitalization and Digital Economy; and regional projects in the Great Lakes Region.

Climate change poses significant challenges to Rwanda’s agriculture sector and food security, given the high reliance on agriculture for livelihoods. Increasing temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, prolonged droughts, and frequent extreme weather events threaten crop production and suitability in many regions of Rwanda. To address these challenges, GIZ Rwanda, through its project “Capacity Development for the Implementation of Rwanda’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC-CD)”, in partnership with Rwanda Meteorological Agency (Meteo Rwanda) and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Germany, launched the initiative “Providing High-Resolution Climate Projections for Agricultural Impact Assessment (HiClAP).”

The NDC-CD project, commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), aims to strengthen the organizational and technical capacities of state and non-state actors to implement Rwanda’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the 2015 Paris Agreement. This includes supporting the integration of climate change adaptation and mitigation into policies and strategies, enhancing access to climate finance, and fostering science-based approaches for climate-resilient development.

In line with these objectives, the HiClAP initiative provides high-resolution climate projections to assess the impacts of climate change on Rwanda’s agricultural systems, enabling evidence-based decision-making for sustainable land use and food security. As part of this initiative, the study titled “Assessing the Impacts of Climate Change on Crop Suitability in Rwanda Using Down-Scaled Climate Data” will be carried out by a Local Research Intern under the direct supervision of PIK experts.

This engagement represents a practical step towards enhancing local research capacity, strengthening climate resilience in the agricultural sector, and contributing to the implementation of Rwanda’s NDC targets.

The Research Intern will perform the following responsibilities and tasks:
