A. About GIZ and the Project

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a federally owned international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations. The GIZ Office in Kigali covers GIZ’s portfolio in Rwanda and Burundi. GIZ Rwanda/Burundi implements projects on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the European Union and other commissioning authorities in the following priority areas: Sustainable Economic Development; Good Governance; Climate, Energy and Sustainable Urban Development; Digitalization and Digital Economy; and regional projects in the Great Lakes Region.

The Fund for the Promotion of Innovations in Agriculture (i4Ag) of the special initiative "Transformation of Agriculture and Food Systems" is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Within this fund, the measure “Sustainable Mechanization of Value Chains through Innovative, Gender-Sensitive Business Models” is implemented jointly with Volkswagen and the Machinery Rings Foundation in Kenya and Rwanda. The project aims to ensure that enterprises adopt innovative, sustainable solutions in the fields of mechanization and energy, creating a model that can be scaled up regionally.

The Rwanda component focuses on supporting smallholder farmers and cooperatives in adopting sustainable mechanization solutions, capacity building, and piloting innovations such as electric tractors and farmer-led service models.

Position Details

  • Location: Kigali, with frequent travel to Gashora, Bugesera
  • Fixed Term: 6 months
  • Number of Positions: 1
  • Start Date: 15th January 2026

The Intern performs the following responsibilities and tasks:

B. Responsibilities 

The intern will work closely with the Commission Manager and technical team and will contribute to the following:

  • Support GIZ and Machinery Rings in implementing activities under the Sustainable Mechanization project.
  • Support the Volkswagen (VW) team in their technical activities related to electric tractors and other mechanization innovations.
  • Assist in organizing multi-stakeholder consultations, field days, demonstrations, and capacity development workshops and trainings in cooperation with project partners.
  • Contribute to Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) activities and data collection related to project implementation.
  • Provide technical support on crop and soil management where relevant to mechanization trials.

C. Tasks 

Core Tasks:

  • Assist the project manager and technical team with planning, organizing, and coordinating project activities, including quality management, monitoring, evaluation, communication, and documentation.
  • Support Machinery Rings in organizing their capacity-building programme, including trainings and field demonstrations.
  • Collect and analyze field data to support agronomic reports, recommendations, and decision-making.
  • Support Volkswagen in the identification of value chains and agricultural services needed for the Empowerment Hub.
  • Assist in updating GIZ’s monitoring platform, including ensuring data quality.
  • Provide logistical and technical support in organizing workshops, events, and regular coordination meetings with project partners. 

D. Required Qualifications, Competences, and Experience

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (graduated within the last 12 months) in Agricultural Mechanization, Crop Production, Agricultural Sciences, or related fields.
  • Enrolment in an academic institution is acceptable if the candidate is in the final year or is waiting for graduation.

Professional Experience:

  • Knowledge of agricultural mechanization, crop production, or value chain development.
  • Familiarity with Rwanda’s agriculture sector and mechanization challenges is an asset.

Other Knowledge and Competences:

  • Very good working knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams).
  • Strong conceptual and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work in an international team and adapt to different tasks.
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral, in Kinyarwanda and English (French is an advantage).
  • Willingness to conduct weekly field work in Gashora and work from GIZ offices in Kigali.
