ABOUT CDP

The Center for Development Policy (CDP) is a Pan-African non-profit and non-partisan think tank that exists to contribute to the development of African countries through policy analysis and capacity building. CDP prioritizes endogenous development solutions and promotes local and empirically tested innovations that have contributed to development in Africa. CDP works with local partners to study, document and share lessons and best practices. Our uniqueness is that we do not only offer policy advice and analysis to organizations but also build their capacities through training and technical support to undertake evidence-based development interventions. At CDP, we offer different short-term trainings and other tailor-made trainings requested by organizations. CDP courses are offered by CDP experts and associates from within the country or abroad. It is against this background, CDP is organizing a training workshop on “Data Analysis of Survey Data using STATA”.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This workshop intends to address data analytical incapability faced by researchers, analysts, planners, consultants, and students when they want to use micro datasets or survey data as a source of data for analysis and data-driven decisions. Micro datasets, for instance, the ones published by the National Institute of Statistics are reliable and credible sources of data for informed decisions, however, most of the time researchers are generate the right data from raw datasets. At CDP, we exist to bridge such analytical gaps. The goal of this course entitled “Data Analysis of survey data using STATA” is to equip the participants with the practical skills necessary to manage and analyze quantitative raw data using STATA, one of the modern data analysis software programs. This includes specific skills in data importation, transforming raw data into actionable insights, data quality checks, cleaning, setting up dataset for analysis, descriptive statistics, graphical representation (visualization), regression analysis among other techniques.

In this training, Training Facilitator will use the raw data for establishment censusin the training. At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • To handle raw data from quantitative surveys, prepare the dataset in usable form that suits their research agenda analysis, and conduct descriptive and inferential statistics.
  • Clean and process raw data, handle missing data, remove inconsistencies and errors, duplicates and outliers;
  • Learn how to tabulate and visualize quantitative data and present descriptive data statistics, inferential statistical analysis for decision making.
  • Visualize data through tables, graphs, dashboards and regression tables
  • Understand the key concepts in survey data analysis and how they are implemented in STATA;
  • Understand the structure and process of survey data analysis and methods for data management in STATA;
  • Use syntax to quickly perform a number of different analyses such as locating data entry errors in using appropriate statistical techniques,
  • Calculate and interpret a reliability coefficient, the estimate for non-response, post-stratification, etc;
  • Learn how to perform and interpret results of analysis in Stata to generate conclusion and decision;

Learn how to present results of the analysis, aligning the results of the analysis with the research questions.

PREREQUISITES

This course will start from scratch and no prior related skills is required. Each Participant is expected to have a laptop and Stata software installed on it. If you do not have Stata software, it will be provided in the training. It will be useful if each participant has an ongoing research project that can be discussed during and after the training sessions.

Target Training Participants

The course is organized for professionals or aspirants who want to be familiar with the survey data features. The target participants include but not limited to social scientists, medical professionals, graduate students, PhD researchers, analysts, consultants, etc.

Due to emphasis on imparting practical skills, this course also intends to serve as an introduction to more advanced analytical courses that emphasize independent thinking and coding skills. It intends to build a foundation for advanced data analytical courses that will follow.

TRAINING FEES:

Professionals and private individuals: 140,000 RWF per person tax inclusive

University students: 50% discount per person (upon provision of student ID)

CERTIFICATE

CDP will issue certificates of completion to participants who will successfully attend the course and pass the course test.
